What do you think about eloping?

I am not engaged and don't plan on marriage for a while, but my boyfriend and I were talking the other day about how we both think eloping (rather than a traditional wedding) is a better choice. Some people say that eloping is selfish. I thought that the wedding was for the bride and groom and that it is their day. So how is it selfish if they want to do it their way? I just don't like being the center of attention and being "fussed" over. I also feel like weddings inconvenience people and that the money could be spent on something more useful lol. What are your opinions on this?
